ナイジェリアから熊本へ：アニメで憧れた日本での生活

まずは、簡単に自己紹介をお願いします。
Please tell me something about yourself.

アブドゥルファトさん：私はナイジェリア南西のオショグボという都市から来ました。専門はコンピューターサイエンスで、現在はコンピューターシミュレーションのための乱数に基づいた研究を行っています。ワンピースなどのアニメが好きで10年ほど前に日本に興味を持ち、留学を決意しました。イメージしていたアニメに描かれているような日本と、実際の日本は異なることも多いですが、日本の歴史や文化には魅了されています。

I’m from Oshogbo, a city in southwestern Nigeria. My field is computer science, and my research is based on random numbers for computer simulations. I’ve been interested in Japan for about ten years, thanks to anime like One Piece, and that inspired me to study here. The Japan I imagined from anime is quite different from the real Japan, but I’m fascinated by the country’s history and culture.

ナイジェリアについてもう少し詳しく教えてください。
Could you tell me more detail about your home country?

アブドゥルファトさん：ナイジェリアには多くの民族が存在しており、細かく分けると500もの言語が存在しています。地域は川を隔てて北、南西、南東の三つに大きく分けることができ、それぞれハウサ語とヨルバ語とイボ語といった3つの言語が主に話されています。一年中暑い常夏の地域で、最近は若者を中心に日本のアニメが人気になってきています。

Nigeria is home to many ethnic groups, with over 500 languages spoken across the country. The region is broadly divided into three areas by rivers: the North, Southwest, and Southeast. The main languages spoken in these areas are Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo, respectively. Nigeria is a hot, tropical country year-round. Recently, Japanese anime has become popular, especially among young people in Japan.

コンピューターサイエンスにはもともと興味があったのですか？
Were you originally interested in Computer science?

アブドゥルファトさん：はい。小さい頃からコンピューターを触ることが好きで、母国の大学でもコンピューターサイエンスを専門としていました。

Yes, I’ve loved using computers since I was a child, and I specialized in computer science in my home country.

留学生活：文化の違いを乗り越える

熊本大学を選んだのはなぜですか？
Why did you become interested in Japanese education?

アブドゥルファトさん：私が熊本を選んだのは、外国の影響をあまり受けていない本当の日本を体験したかったからです。日本に来る前は、東京や大阪といった大都市のことしか知りませんでしたが、調べていくうちに、大都市ほど人混みも外国人観光客も多くない熊本を知り、ここにしようと決めました。また、熊本の気候は日本の他の地域と違って少し暖かいのでそこも気に入っています。

I chose Kumamoto because I wanted to experience part the real Japan without too much foreign influence. Before coming to Japan, I only knew about big cities like Tokyo and Osaka. However, as I did more research, I discovered Kumamoto, which isn’t as crowded and doesn’t have as many foreign tourists. So, I decided to come here.
Also, I prefer the weather of Kumamoto, it’s a bit warm unlike other parts of Japan.

日本の文化や習慣で驚いたことは？
Are there any Japanese cultures or customs that surprised you?

アブドゥルファトさん：日本人の落ち着きと静けさには驚きました。にぎやかな社会であるナイジェリアから来た私にとっては特にそう感じるのかもしれません。ナイジェリアでは人々はいつも大きな声で話しますので、日本人からみればケンカをしているように見えるかも知れません（笑）
そして食べ物、特に寿司や刺身は、最初は慣れませんでしたが、だんだん好きになっていきました。

The calmness and quietness of the people here is surprising, especially for me coming from Nigeria which is a pretty loud society. People often speak loudly, which might make it seem like they’re arguing from a Japanese perspective.
And the food, especially sushi and sashimi, it was an acquired taste.

大まかな一日のスケジュールを教えてください。
Could you tell me a rough schedule for typical day?

アブドゥルファトさん：大体毎朝5時頃に起床し、お祈りをしたり朝食を食べたりして9時過ぎに家を出ます。そこから20時頃まで研究室で研究をした後は、ジムに行ったり、学校周辺をランニングしたりします。21時30分頃家について、2～3時間程度自由時間を過ごして就寝する流れです。

I usually wake up around 5 a.m. every morning. I do my prayers, have breakfast, and leave the house a bit after 9 a.m. I spend the day in the lab doing research until around 8 p.m. After that, I either go to the gym or go for a run around the campus. I get home around 9:30 p.m., have a couple of hours of free time, and then go to bed.

休日はどんなことをして過ごしているのですか？
What do you do on your days off?

アブドゥルファトさん：熊本を観光したり、映画を見たり寝たりしています。そんなに多くはありませんが、気分を変えたいと思うときは友達に電話をしたりすることもあります。

Sightseeing in Kumamoto, watching movies, and sleeping. I don’t do it often, but when I want a change of pace, I call my friends.

日本の大学と母国の大学との違いは？
what are differences between universities in Japan and universities in your home country?

アブドゥルファトさん：大きな違いの一つは教室の環境です。日本の大学の教室は非常に設備が整っており、家具も充実しています。もう一つ驚いた違いは授業の評価方法です。ナイジェリアでの勉強は主に試験を受けて、授業で講師が教えたことをそのまま書くことが中心ですが、こちらではコース全体に対する学生の理解度で評価されます。これこそが学生を真に評価する素晴らしい方法だと思います。

One major difference is the classroom setting. The class rooms in the university are really well equipped and furnished. One other surprising difference for me was the way the classes are assessed. Studying in Nigeria is mostly about writing exams and giving the lecturer what he gave you in class, but assessment here has to do with the students overall understanding of the course, which I think is a great way to truly grade students.

熊本からナイジェリアへ：夢と挑戦

留学後はどのようなキャリアを想像しているのですか？
What are your future career plans and dreams?

アブドゥルファトさん：熊本大学で見聞きしたことを、自分の国で再現できればと思っています。教育は重要ですが、（どんな教育でも良い訳ではなく）正しい教育を受けることが何よりも重要だと考えています。教室での勉強も良いですが、自由に研究し新しいアイデアに挑戦することは、成長するための素晴らしい方法だとここ日本で感じました。私は、試験に合格するためだけに教科書を読むのではなく、より実践的な学習の必要性をもっと母国で広めていけたらと思います。
また、もう一つ再現したいものは、バスのICカードシステムです。日本のこのシステムは非常に興味深く役立つものだと感じています。これと同様のシステムをナイジェリアでも再現したいです。

I hope to be able to replicate some of the things I’ve witnessed here back in my country. Education is important, but more important, having the right kind of education. While classroom studying is good, having the freedom to research and try new ideas is a great way to improve oneself. I plan to raise awareness on the need for practical training rather just reading class materials to pass exams. And on the entrepreneurial side, the bus IC card system used here is really fascinating and helpful, I hope to be able to replicate something similar back in Nigeria.

今後熊大への留学を考えている未来の留学生にアドバイスをお願いします！
Please give some advice to future international students who are considering studying abroad at Kumamoto University!

アブドゥルファトさん：日本での留学生活は本当に素晴らしい経験になると思います。これから来る留学生に何かアドバイスするならば、（日本人はとてもシャイで）友達を作ることが容易ではなかったので、そのような文化に慣れることをお勧めします。ただ、それも含めて全体的には楽しい経験になっています。また、もし機会があれば日本語を学ぶことをお勧めします。物事がずっと楽になると思うからです。

Studying in Japan is a really great experience, I will advise incoming international students to get used to rejection because it’s not easy to make friends, but it’s a fun experience all round.
Also, if you have the chance to, Learn Japanese, it’ll make things a lot easier.
