I chose Kumamoto because I wanted to experience part the real Japan without too much foreign influence. Before coming to Japan, I only knew about big cities like Tokyo and Osaka. However, as I did more research, I discovered Kumamoto, which isn’t as crowded and doesn’t have as many foreign tourists. So, I decided to come here.

The calmness and quietness of the people here is surprising, especially for me coming from Nigeria which is a pretty loud society. People often speak loudly, which might make it seem like they’re arguing from a Japanese perspective.

I usually wake up around 5 a.m. every morning. I do my prayers, have breakfast, and leave the house a bit after 9 a.m. I spend the day in the lab doing research until around 8 p.m. After that, I either go to the gym or go for a run around the campus. One major difference is the classroom setting. The class rooms in the university are really well equipped and furnished. One other surprising difference for me was the way the classes are assessed. Studying in Nigeria is mostly about writing exams and giving the lecturer what he gave you in class, but assessment here has to do with the students overall understanding of the course, which I think is a great way to truly grade students.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I hope to be able to replicate some of the things I’ve witnessed here back in my country. Education is important, but more important, having the right kind of education. While classroom studying is good, having the freedom to research and try new ideas is a great way to improve oneself. I plan to raise awareness on the need for practical training rather just reading class materials to pass exams. And on the entrepreneurial side, the bus IC card system used here is really fascinating and helpful, I hope to be able to replicate something similar back in Nigeria.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
